Book promotion has turned out to be even more difficult than I thought it would be. I like writing the blog, and this has been an opportunity to get back in contact with people I haven’t talked to in ages. I don’t like doing a mailing list and sending a bunch of people an email, but I understand that’s the way it works.
I feel like I’ve posted links to the website a million times on Facebook, but luckily no one has complained. Everyone has been very cool about all of this, and I appreciate my friends and family and all their support.
I’ve finally been getting more feedback about the book, and it’s exciting to hear what people have to say. Writing a book is so much work, and then you’re putting it out there for the world to read and judge. You need to be ready for anything, to steel yourself for the time when someone says it sucks.
I was lucky with No Guarantees. No one ever criticized it harshly (to my face), and it got one great review and one decent review. I’m thinking about posting a link to the Kirkus review of No Guarantees. They were very kind, and I think Magical Shrinking is about fifty or more times better, so we’ll see what they say about this new work.
What’s really fulfilling right now is getting to write about mental illness and drugs in a forum like this where other people can comment or just read. With a book, most people never get a chance to talk to you about it (although the last book came out 17 years ago – that might not be true anymore…).
Eventually I’ll be working on my dissertation for school, and the more I read blogs from people who have bipolar disorder, the more I think my dissertation might have something to do with stigma.
That’s enough for now. Just wanted to check in, say hello, and tell all of you who know me that I realize you got another mailing list email from me today, and I love what you’re willing to put up with to help me! Thank you!
